Green Customs and Tropical Forest Conservation in Thailand

Indigenous people worldwide, including the indigenous people of Thailand, are still practicing their “green customs” of forest conservation. Interestingly, forest conservation in areas outside of legally-recognized protected areas is substantial in some countries. A prominent form in a number of South and Southeast Asian countries includes the “sacred forests”, where animals and plants are customarily protected. Some species are endemic to the areas. This stimulating presentation will discuss how rapid economic development and growth are threatening the green customs in many countries, and how the changing attitude of younger human generations is also a concern in the preservation of customs and indigenous knowledge.
